The summer before eighth grade, my family rented a beach house for a week in Rhode Island.
.
As soon as we got there, and while everyone else unpacked, I quickly tied on my first-ever string bikini, and after forbidding my family to follow me, went down to the water with my beach towel, my Walkman and a fresh set of AA batteries.
.
I spent the whole day laying out, hoping that a boy would walk over and chat me up. And, okay, fine, tongue-kiss me.
.
Not only did zero boys swing by that day (turns out the beaches of Rhode Island have a verrrry different vibe than those of the Jersey Shore), but in my hook-up haste, I had forgotten to put on sunscreen. My mom took this photo of me that night because she is clearly a very cruel and heartless person. Look at how depressed I am!

(pls note I am a mom now and will absolutely do this to my daughters if blessed with a comparable opportunity)

I got soooooooo fucking sunburned. I can still feel the pain. The next day I was basically one enormous blister. I couldn’t go outside. I could barely wear clothes. I was deathly afraid to take a shower. For these reasons and more, I did not leave the rental.
.
The furthest I ventured out was on the last night of vacation, which I spent on the porch with my little sister, who I forced to sit behind me and peel strips of dead skin off my back.
.
The next morning, we drove home. Shortly after we left, my Walkman batteries died. Unfortunately my cassettes all had lyrics with curse words (I was very cool), so the only other option was my sister’s Raffi tapes, which we listened to for roughly the next five hours.

I’m speechless. The scope of this play is incredible, a hundred different threads slowly woven together, pulling tighter and tighter. I didn’t breathe for the last 15 minutes. And then, when the theater went black at the very end, I let out an impromptu cry of exhilaration and burst into tears!
